Care For Your Suede and Leather fur Mukluk Boots

1. HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO APPLY ALL PROTECTOR?

It does depend on the weather and how often you wear your footwear but as a protector spray does wear off when in contact with the elements and with perspiration. So the short answer is, the more you wear your shoes the more you need protect them. The more rain, snow, salt and BAD weather that you will be exposed to, the more you will need to protect your footwear. And another tip is to spray All Protector on the cuffs of your pants to protect them from stains. Good stuff!

2. I LOVE SUEDE MUKLUKS AND FUR BOOTS BUT I’ M AFRAID TO BUY THEM BECAUSE THEY LOOK VERY FRAGILE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Suede Mukluks and Suede Boots is really just leather that has been buffed to give a soft napped finished. So keep suede looking great the first thing to do, BEFORE WEARING THEM, is to give them two light applications of Tana Suede Protector. This will keep dirt and stains on the surface so that you can easily remove them with a rubberized Suede Brush. It is a good idea to give your suede shoes another light spray with Suede Protector after brushing them. With regular spraying and brushing, you can indulge your passion for suede mukluk and fur boots.

3. WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO MAKE MY LEATHER AND SUEDE MUKLUKS LAST LONGER?
Helping leather and suede mukluks to last longer is easy and takes a lot less time than we think it does. Super easy Mukluk care includes protection; cleaning; polishing (polish leather finish only) and inside care. This technique works best when done together because each step completes the other steps. We know that if mukluks are not protected when they are new, they are much more difficult to clean. If mukluks are not cleaned before polishing, the dirt build-up makes it difficult to achieve a high shine. Mukluks not protected after cleaning and polishing, will once again have dirt and stains damaging the mukluks. Of course with mukluks clean, shiny and protected on the outside it is important to have them clean and fresh on the inside. For additional Shoecare products visit our shoecare section.

4. WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT SALT STAINS ON MY BOOTS?
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, as the old saying goes. It is important to apply several light coats of protector to your mukluk boots to protect them from the salt. Do this before you first wear them and often afterwards.

When you come in from the snow, slush and salt, WIPE YOUR MUKLUK BOOTS OFF IMMEDIATELY with a wet cloth dampened with a bit of vinegar. This is important because salt reacts very quickly at room temperature. We know what salt does to our cars! To make your job faster and easier, we sell an easy to use Salt Stain Remover, complete with handy applicator. If the white salt marks remain even after cleaning, the salt has probably removed the dye colour from your boots. Apply a Shoe Polish Wax or Liquid with pigments and dyes to cover the white marks. You may need to apply it a few times to cover up the white marks. Remember to protect afterwards or you will be back where you started.

5. MOTHER ALWAYS TOLD ME TO BUY THE BEST QUALITY OF SHOES THAT I COULD AFFORD. IS GENUINE LEATHER STILL THE BEST?
Mother is always right. As we know, shoes are made from many different materials but the best and most popular material is leather. Leather breathes, it shapes itself to our foot, it is lightweight, yet very durable. Leather is a product of nature and a by-product of the meat industry. So leather is a very environmentally friendly material. The skins of cows, pigs, sheep, deer and reptiles are tanned into leather. Tanning is the process that turns the animal skins into beautiful leather. The process takes about 6 weeks and has approximately 150 steps, including: curing, scything for uniformity, adding colour, drying & finishing. Finishing, the last step in tanning produces the special look and feel of leather. It is the different finishes that provide new styles and fashions each season! The major finishes are smooth leather, suede leather, nubuck leather, patent leather, oiled, silicone & waxed leather.

6. WHEN I BUY LEATHER BOOTS THAT ARE MARKED WATERPROOF, DO I STILL NEED TO BUY A PROTECTOR?
Boots that have a “Waterproof Leather” tag on them, have protectors similar to those protectors you can buy, already tanned into the leather. This tanned-in process allows the manufacturer to guarantee the waterproofing qualities of the “leather” for 3 to 6 months. This is longer than a surface applied protector. However many footwear manufacturers recommend that you use All Protector to enhance and prolong the waterproof qualities of their leather. But it is important to note that “Waterproof Leather” does not mean “Waterproof Footwear”. Waterproof footwear has additional taping and cementing at seams and sole edges, and a higher price due to additional materials and labor. Read the tag to ensure you get the type of footwear you need. You will also see hangtags for Oil Tanned, Silicone Tanned and Waxed Leathers. This leather has additional oils, silicones or waxes applied during the tanning process.
Our Mukluks are not water proof but water resistant when you use the All Protector  follow the directions printed on the label to ensure proper application.

Moccasins, Moccasins, Moccasins

Welcome to V1.3
Moccasins, Moccasins, Moccasins

Yes we wrote moccasins three times! And guess what? It started snowing in Calgary today!  We welcome the snow with open arms and snow shovels! We are in for some snow again and you know what that means. Shoveling  snow again. But how about the warm up after being in the cold all day? Its one thing we look forward to after a long day out in the cold. Just imagine coming in from the cold and the aroma of hot coco in the air and a pair of comfy moccasins to slip your feet into while you have a seat next to the  fire place.  Sounds like a good idea and Canadian OutFooters is a great place to find your next  pair.

So how do you go about finding the right pair of moccasins at Canadian OutFooters. Well the first thing you will need is your correct shoe size. To choose the right size of moccasin is simple. Traditional moccasins are made in whole sizes only. So you will need to determine what whole size you need. We will start with ladies sizing. Ladies need to order their true size. If your shoe size is a half size then you need to order half size down. If your shoe size is a whole size then order that size.

Example 1:  Eve wears 7 1/2 shoes so  Eve needs to order size 7

Example 2: Jane wears 7 shoes so Jane needs to order size 7

Now we will look at mens sizing. Men need to order their true size. So if your shoe size is a whole size then order that size and just when you thought you figured it out! If your shoe size is a half size, then you need to order up a half size.

Example  1: Adam wears size 10 1/2 so Adam needs to order size 11

Example 2: Tarzan Wears size 10 so Tarzan needs to order size 10

Ok so we are on to the next step in your search for the right pair of moccasins.

You need to decide on lining or not. While some like the feel of fleece lining ((synthetic (wool/acrylic blend)) Others prefer a natural wool or sheepskin. All three types are very popular for different reasons. Fleece moccasins tend to be less expensive and keep your feet warm but tend to get damp from the moisture from your feet. Natural wool is more expensive than Fleece but less expensive than Sheepskin. The natural wool fibers will absorb moisture from your feet keeping them dry and warm. Finaly sheepskin is the most expensive lining, it absorbs moisture from your feet keeping them dry and warm but is noticeably more comfortable and softer than the fleece and natural wool lining.

Moccasins without lining are most often made with a padded leather or suede sole. They are best suited for wear on tile and hardwood floors. These are most popular among men. They are also great for use in your backyard and on the patio and deck.

Deciding on what type of sole depends on the use of your new moccasins. If you plan on wearing your moccasins around town you will need a gum rubber sole. However if you are using them on the patio, backyard or around the house you can expect to get years out of a pair of leather or suede soled moccasins.

Now your ready  for your next pair of moccasins.

Mukluk and Moccasin Season Is Just Around The Corner…..

Welcome to Canadian OutFooters v1.0

It is beginning to feel a lot like fall these days. With Calgary experiencing one of the worst Summer’s in history Calgarians are wondering when and if they will get a break from the cold this year. Well whether we want to believe it or not (No Pun intended) Mukluk and moccasin season is approaching fast. It’s that time of year when house dwellers seek the comfort and warmth of moccasins to be worn on tile and hardwood floors. Others venturing off to work or school seek the warmth and comfort of winter boots. The extremists wear sorrels, the hunter wears cabella and the fashioners, well that depends on the day. But one thing is for sure is the increasing poularity of the Canadian Mukluk. Canadian Mukluks are becoming common place in the everyday life of anyone who tries them on for the first time. Like the Ugg and Emu boots, mukluks can be worn anywhere and anytime. They keep your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  They turn heads and you should be ready to tell someone where you bought them. It has been said by a few that they did not want to let the secret out of the bag as they wanted to be the only ones in their city wearing mukluks. But as the days went on they couldn’t keep their little secret.

When you are purchasing a pair of mukluks it is a good idea to investigate before you buy.  Here is a list of things you should ask and look for.

1. Where are they Made?  Quality Mukluks are made in Canada with genuine Canadian suede or leather and are lined with fleece or wool.

2. What type of sole does it have?  The 2 most common types of soles used are Traditional Gum (for outdoor wear), and Leather soles. (Indoor wear)

3. What type of fur is used? The most common type is Farmed Rabbit fur in four colours: Black, Brown, Grey, and White. They can  be also made with Coyote, Blue Fox, Beaver, Raccoon, Wolf, and more.

4. What is the height? The average height is 16″ for Tall and 13″ for Short .

5. What is the circumference ? The Standard is 17″ this measurement is taken from the thickest part of the calf.

6. What size do I need? This is 99.9% accurate so order your true size! You want them to fit snug as they will stretch to fit. If you are a half size, go down to the nearest whole size. Whatever you do do not order up. They will be to big.

7. Are mukluks waterproof? Mukluks are not waterproof. They are water resistant. Mukluks are meant to be worn in the snow or during summer months. If you wear a pair of mukluks out in the pouring rain your feet will be wet. Let’s face the facts, any suede and leather boot is not waterproof . You need to apply two coats of all protector to the suede area of the mukluks. The first applcation will seal the suede and the second application will apply a thin protective layer to the mukluk. This will help repel the moisture away from the boot keeping your feet warm and dry. You should apply the all protector after 8 to 10 wears. You can never apply to much. This will also extend the life of your mukluks.
